Understanding GST in Australia

Essential information about Goods and Services Tax for Australian businesses

What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most goods, services, and other items sold or consumed in Australia. It was introduced on July 1, 2000, as part of the Howard Government's tax reform package.

GST is collected by businesses at each stage of the supply chain and is ultimately paid by the final consumer. Businesses can generally claim credits for the GST they pay on business purchases.

GST Registration Requirements

You must register for GST if:

  • Your business or enterprise has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more
  • Your non-profit organization has a GST turnover of $150,000 or more
  • You provide taxi travel or ride-sourcing services, regardless of turnover

You can choose to register voluntarily even if your turnover is below these thresholds.

How to Calculate GST

There are three main GST calculations you may need to perform:

  1. Adding GST to a price: Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.1
  2. Removing GST from a price: Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.1
  3. Finding the GST component: Divide the GST-inclusive price by 11

Our calculator above automates these calculations for you.

GST-Free and Input-Taxed Items

Some goods and services are GST-free, including:

  • Most basic food items
  • Most medical and health services
  • Most educational courses
  • Exports

Other supplies are input-taxed, such as financial services and residential rent, meaning no GST is included in the price, but the supplier cannot claim GST credits.

GST and BAS Lodgement

If you're registered for GST, you must report and pay the GST collected (minus GST credits) to the ATO through your Business Activity Statement (BAS).

Depending on your business size, you may need to lodge your BAS:

  • Quarterly (most common)
  • Monthly (if your GST turnover is $20 million or more)
  • Annually (if eligible)

myBAS simplifies this entire process by automatically calculating your GST obligations and preparing your BAS lodgement.

Record-Keeping Requirements

For GST purposes, you must keep:

  • Tax invoices for purchases over $82.50 (including GST)
  • Records of all sales and purchases where GST applies
  • Records of how you calculated GST amounts

These records must be kept for at least 5 years and be in English (or easily translatable).

GST Calculation Formulas

Quick reference for common GST calculations

Calculation Type Formula Example
Add GST to a price Price × 1.1 $100 × 1.1 = $110
Remove GST from a price Price ÷ 1.1 $110 ÷ 1.1 = $100
Calculate GST amount from GST-inclusive price Price ÷ 11 $110 ÷ 11 = $10
Calculate GST amount from GST-exclusive price Price × 0.1 $100 × 0.1 = $10
Calculate GST-inclusive price from GST amount GST amount × 11 $10 × 11 = $110
Calculate GST-exclusive price from GST amount GST amount × 10 $10 × 10 = $100
